ESO4: Ireland, the Emerald Island!

Fáilte go hÉirinn! Welcome to ireland (in Irish). We carry on with our articular trip to the Emerald Island. This is one of its nicknames because it's soooo green! I am particularly keen on Irish music so get ready to start up every lesson with a piece of Irish music, either traditional Celtic songs or famous pop ones! Let's start up the journey with "Stars", by The Cranberries. Isn't it green?
LOOK!: What instruments can you identify?

By the way, I went to their concert in Barcelona last month. Did you go to any concert last year?

The stars are bright tonight
and I am walking nowhere
i guess i will be alright
desire gets you nowhere
And you are always right
and my, you are so perfect
Take you as you are
i'll have you as you are
i'll take you as you are
I love you just the way you are
i'll have you just the way you are
i'll take you just the way you are
does anyone love the way they are?
The stars are bright tonight
a distance is between us
and i will be okay
the worst i've ever seen us
Still i have my weaknesses
still i have my strengths
and still i have my ugliness
but i..
I love you just the way you are
i'll have you just the way you are
i'll take you just the way you are
does anyone love the way they are? (x2)
Star, star...
Activities:
1. Whats the mistake with the personal pronoun (1st person singular)?
2. Can you discriminate regular from irregular verbs?
3. Turn the verb tenses into the Past Simple. Example: "The stars were bright tonight..."
4. Who sings? How does she feel? Where are they? When was the videoclip shot?

ESO4: Irish music and 20th c. history

Here you have the videos of the two events we are dealing with in the English lesson about Irish History.

ZOMBIE, by The Cranberries
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
When the violence causes silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taken over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...
BLOODY SUNDAY, by U2
I can't believe the news today
Oh, I can't close my eyes and make it go away!

How long?
How long must we sing this song?
How long?
How long?

'Cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight...

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead-end streets
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up, puts back up against the wall!

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
All right lets go!

And the battles just begun
Theres many lost but tell me who has won
The trenches dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart!

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday

How long...how long must we sing this song?
How long?
How long?

'Cause tonight...we can be as one
Tonight
Tonight (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Tonight
Tonight (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Tonight
Come get some!

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away
Wipe your tears away
I wipe your tears away (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
I wipe your blood shot eyes (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
Here I come!

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die!

The real battle yet began (Sunday, Bloody Sunday)
To claim the victory Jesus won (Sunday, Bloody Sunday
on...

Sunday, Bloody Sunday
Sunday, Bloody Sunday...

Karaoke version with real footage of the Anglo-Irish conflict:

 Your turn:
1. The Cranberries' song mentions 1916: what happenned in Ireland that year?
2. U2's song, Bloody Sunday refers a violent historical event. When did it happen? What happenned?
3. There are several similarities between both songs. Mention some of them: e.g. family.
4. Where is war placed in the former song? And in the latter? (they are parts of the body=metaphor).
5. Did you like the songs? Did you know them? What is the value of music in reporting these events?

ESO1: What Can I Do?

Hi lads! This is one of my favourite songs, by my favourite pop group, The Corrs. They are Sharon, Caroline, Andrea and Jim. They are siblings: one brother and three sisters in the same band! They are from Ireland, so they are Irish. Their unique feature is that they mix Celtic music with pop sounds.

Let's watch their videoclip: "What can I do?". Here you have the lyrics. Complete them with the following words:

fly  -  times -  say -  days -  take

WHAT CAN I DO? (by The Corrs)

I haven't slept at all in _______ (1)
It's been so long since we've talked
And I have been here many ________ (2)
I just don't know what I'm doing wrong

What can I do to make you love me
What can I do to make you care
What can I say to make you feel this
What can I do to get you there

There's only so much I can _____ (4)
And I just got to let it go
And who knows I might feel better
If I don't try and I don't hope

What can I do to make you love me
What can I do to make you care
What can I say to make you feel this
What can I do to get you there

No more waiting, no more aching
No more fighting, no more trying

Maybe there's nothing more to _____ (4)
And in a funny way I'm calm
Because the power is not mine
I'm just gonna let it _____ (5)

What can I do to make you love me
What can I do to make you care
What can I say to make you feel this
What can I do to get you there

Love me

Answer these questions:

1. What musical instruments do they play? (Jim plays the...; Andrea sings and plays the...)
2. Do you like the song? (Yes, I like it/No, I don't).
3. Can you play any musical instrument? (Yes, I can play.../No, I can't.)

VOCABULARY: drums, electric guitar, Spanish guitar, piano, recorder (=flauta dolça), violin, harp, tin whistle, bodhràn, bouzouki.

NOTE: 'What Can I Do?' Sometimes you make me ask this question to myself when I want you to follow the three rules we have in class:
1-raise UP your hand when you want to talk;
2-sit DOWN propperly;
3-use the computer for the lesson (not for other purposes!).
Let's follow them! :)
