ESO4: Global issues and Carbon Footprint Calculator

WARM-UP: Watch this videoclip by Michael Jackson. What global issues does it address?

LISTENING: You can take this quiz from http://www.esolcourses.com/content/topics/songs/michael-jackson/earth-song.html.

READING: Now, read the following definition from timeforchange.org:

A carbon footprint is defined as:
The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
https://www.complydirect.com/uploads/media/Main%20Navigation/Latest/the%20carbon%20footprint2.jpgIn other words: When you drive a car, the engine burns fuel which creates a certain amount of CO2, depending on its fuel consumption and the driving distance. (CO2 is the chemical symbol for carbon dioxide). When you heat your house with oil, gas or coal, then you also generate CO2. Even if you heat your house with electricity, the generation of the electrical power may also have emitted a certain amount of CO2. When you buy food and goods, the production of the food and goods also emitted some quantities of CO2.

Your carbon footprint is the sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide), which were induced by your activities in a given time frame. Usually a carbon footprint is calculated for the time period of a year. Do you want to know how big is yours?

Then, calculate your carbon footprint with this application provided by WWF: http://footprint.wwf.org.uk/
You might want to adapt it to your context (this is from a UK webpage), so change British pounds for euros, instead, and so on. I'm sure you will be surprised with your results!

HOW BIG IS YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT?

Notice the tips given on the right while you answer the questions. Once you finish answering questions about your FOOD, TRAVEL, HOME, and other habits like RECYCLING, complete the sentence:

"We would need ___ planets if everyone lived my lifestyle We only have one."

Remember: Your footprint is roughly how many planets we would need if everyone lived your lifestyle (notice the use of the second conditional). A lower score is better.
SPEAKING: What can we do to reduce our carbon footprint?

WRITING: Write a paragraph about what we can do to reduce our footprint. Use conditional sentences to express facts and give tips. "If we use the bicycle instead of the car, we will reduce carbon emissions" / "If we didn't recycle, the planet would be in worse conditions"...

EXTRA: More ideas: WWF proposes a campaign to reduce your footprint. If you wish, sign up to their 7-day challenge and follow 21 tips to reduce your footprint. Then, share the experience with your family and friends!

TO SUM UP. Reflect on this sentence: We can act locally to impact globally. Do you agree or disagree? To what extend?

CAMPAIGNS: Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students, choose a cause and design a campaign.
Suggestions: ENVIRONMENT (endangered species, recycling, carbon footprint, global warming/climate change); GLOBAL ISSUES (poverty, racism, xenophobia, homophobia, bullying...).

Think of the content (problem, causes, consequences, how we can help) and the form of advertising (posters, leaflets, radio announcement, ...). You may want to use the Internet for your cause (virals, meme, change.org, Tweeter hashtags...). Use language creatively (puns, rhymes...) to get your message through!

Comment the aspects of communication in the following campaigns: and identify the source ("emisor") and the addressees ("receptor"), code (language), channel (image, text, video, poster...), and the message itself:

ESO3: Bedrooms of the future

How do you imagine bedrooms in the future? Here you have 8 ideas. Read them, look at the picture and discuss with your classmates.

http://www.sleepcouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/The-Bed-of-the-Future-Hi-Res-jpeg.jpg
How would you design your bedroom if you lived in 2050?
Describe the bed, the walls, and all the gadgets you would use!

EXTRA: Look at this invention. "The Dreampod can be used as a normal bed, but you can also program your dreams to some extent." Carry on the composition...

ESO4 Unit 6: Global issues. Revision.

ESO4: Fossil and Renewable Energies and the Three R's rule: Reduce, Re use, Recycle!

MAKE TWO GROUPS.

GROUP A:
SPEAKING: Look at the image. What renewable energies can you identify in the picture?

Think of: hydropower, wind, biomass, or solar sources. Where does the energy come from? What do we use to generate energy from them? Do you know any uses or examples in your area?
Now think in pairs: What are the advantages and disadvantages of these energies?
Prepare a speech to explain what you learnt to group B.

GROUP B
:
SPEAKING: Look at the image. What fossil fuels can you identify in the picture?

Where do they come from? What do we use to generate energy from them? Do you know any uses?
Now think in pairs: What are the advantages and disadvantages of these energies?
Prepare a speech to explain what you learnt to group A.

DEBATE. Once you have exposed what you have learnt, compare these two pictures and debate.
Data: Oil and natural gas supply about 62 percent of the energy we use today

EXTRA: Ideas for your campaign! What's the order in the 3 R's? Do you apply them in your school? And at home? Can we do something else to accomplish them? Share!

ESO2: Creative Food Exhibition

CREATIVE FOOD EXHIBITION

Don't be scared as these poor eggs are... Be creative!

Here you have four examples I've cooked to inspire you. Remember to have an adult's supervision in the kitchen if you are going to use fire or sharp knives.

This is a MASQUERADE'S MENU: what are the snack, starter, main course, and dessert "masks" made of?

Artistic faces and Lidia's ideas about sausages as octopus and crabs!:

Work in teams. What are your ideas? Bring them to class!

ESO3 & 4: Conditionals

EXTRA HELP FOR CONDITIONALS:

Imagen
Remember we have the ZERO CONDITIONAL (it's always 100% sure):

If water is at 0ºC, it freezes.
[IF + Present] ,  [Present]

If you heat ice, it melts.
More explanations here: http://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verbs-conditional_5.htm

FIRST CONDITIONAL (it's possible and probable, e.g. from 50% to 99% sure)

If I study, I will pass the exam.
What's the formula?:

SECOND CONDITIONAL (it's possible but improbable, e.g. 10% sure)

If I won the lottery, I would help people and travel a lot!
What's the formula?:

For the first and second conditionals have a look in here:
http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/grammar/if.htm

If you are curious about the Third Conditional, have a go... if you dare!
THIRD CONDITIONAL (it's impossible, 0%, you regret but you can't go back to the past)
http://www.activebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/hot-wings-400x402.jpg
If I had known, I wouldn't have tried that food.
What's the formula?

Type 0:      [If + Present], [Present]
Type I:      [If + Present], [will+ inf.]
Type II:     [If + Past ], [would + inf.]
Type III:    [If + Past Perf], [would have + past part.]

Mixed II & III: [If + Past Perfect], [would + inf.]

Remember:
1. The conditional construction does not normally use will or would in if-clauses.

2. For the second conditional, were replaces was: If I were a rich man... If I were you...
3. Instead of if not, we can use unless: I'll be back tomorrow unless I have an emergency call.

4.There is a "mixed type" as well, for the present results of an unreal condition in the past:
[If + Past Perfect], [would + inf.]
If you had warned me [then], I would not be in prison [now].

ESO3: Modals and scenarios for the future

What might life be like in the future?

READING: "We face an infinite number of futures". When I was your age we imagined a future with flying cars,  teletransportation, and the capacity to minimize objects and keep them in our pockets.

Well... we are still waiting for flying cars but actually, we have sort of seen the other possibilities come true: twenty years ago we had to send a letter, a picture or a film through the post and it would take a long time to get from Spain to, say... New Zealand.

Now, it's just a click away with the internet! Letters have turned into e-mails, photographs have gone digital and you don't need to have a physical tape to watch a film. Isn't it a kind of teletransportation?

Every two minutes, we take as many photos as all of humanity took during the 1800s.

Same with the minimization of objects... Have you got a smart phone? Well, look at the picture below and think about the changes we've had in just a couple of decades!

SPEAKING: Comment on the picture below and imagine how technology would be in 20 years time.

Everything in this 1991 RadioShack ad exists in a single smartphone.

Imagine you have a "time machine"
Un científico iraní dice haber creado una «máquina del tiempo»So... How do you imagine the future in 20 years? And in 2100? And beyond?

Let's stop in the mid-way and watch a video on what will life be like in 2015. Hyper innovation:

LISTENING: http://www.theguardian.com/futurescapes/video/what-will-life-be-like-in-2025-scenario-one-hyper-innovation-video

What are the innovations mentioned? Do you agree or disagree? What do you think it will happen?

WRITING: Write an essay on this topic: "Technology will control our lives in the future"
Instructions (revise 'your' modals):

You have to structure it into an Introduction, a Body (pros and cons) and a Conclusion.
You don't have to check innovations on the Internet.
You can list advantages and disadvantages of technological innovations
...or you could even invent future gadgets too.
You shall give your opinion. You should not use informal language.
You may include a creative title. You also might include pictures.
You must be punctual. Therefore, you must not be late in give it in!
And remember: you need to double-check your work before printing it off (spelling, tenses, connectors...)
You ought to see the TIPS below!

NOTE: try to work in pairs, one giving reasons in favor of the thesis and the other against it.

TIPS ON FLUENCY (CONNECTORS):
First, write a short paragraph introducing the topic.
Then, try to use these expressions in the body of your composition (ideally two paragraphs: positive and negative effects of technology):
a) On the one hand, on the other hand... firstly, secondly... (to introduce arguments)
b) Furthermore, in addition, moreover (to add information)
c) However, nevertheless (to contradict an argument)
d) For example for instance (to exemplify)
To end up you can use:
e) In conclusion, finally, to sum up (to finish)...
f) ... I think, I consider, in my opinion... (to give your opinion)
